Privacy Policy
Grandma's Games ("the app", "we", "us") is a family game app from Hunter Thomas. This policy tells you what data the app collects, why we collect it, and what you can do about it. We collect only the data that we need to run the games and to make the app better.
The short version
- You can play alone without an account. Solo games stay on your phone.
- For family games, the app makes a guest account for you. It needs only a name.
- We count simple usage events, such as "a game opened". These events do not contain your name, your notes, or your messages.
- We do not show ads. We do not use ad trackers. We do not sell your data.
- The app does not sell anything. There are no in-app purchases.
Who the app is for
The app is for families and people who know each other. It is not a social network. Nobody can find you by search. You play with family only when you send them a code, or when they send a code to you.
What we collect and why
- Account and name. To play with family, the app makes a guest account for you. We keep the name that you type, and the time that you last used the app. If you choose to save your account, we also keep your email address, or your Google or Apple sign-in. We use this data only to sign you in on a new phone.
- Family games and rooms. For a family game, we keep the game: the cards or the board, the score, whose turn it is, the moves, the house rules, and the game code. For a family room, we keep the room name, the room code, and who is in the room. This lets a game continue when you put your phone down. It also lets the computer take a turn for a player who is away for a long time.
- Voice messages. If you record a voice message in a game, we keep it so that the other players in that game can hear it. We delete voice messages after the game ends. See "Voice messages are temporary" below.
- Grandma's Fridge. When a family game ends, the app can put a card on Grandma's Fridge. The card shows the game, the names and scores of the players, and a drawing if you add one. Only the people in that game or in that family room can see it. Hearts and other reactions on the card are kept too.
- Notifications. The app asks before it turns on notifications. If you say yes, we keep a notification token for your phone. We use it to tell you when it is your turn, or when family sends you a voice message. You can turn notifications off at any time in your phone's settings.
-
Usage events. The app sends us a few simple events: the app opened (
app_open), a game opened (game_open), a solo game ended (game_finish), and a lesson opened (learn_open). Each event has the game name, the type of play, the time, your phone type (for example Android), and the app version. Each event also has a random number that the app makes for your phone when you install it, and a random number for each time you open the app. If you are signed in, the event also has your account number. Events do not have your name, your notes, your messages, or your cards. We keep these events in our own database. We do not use an outside analytics company. We use the events to learn which games people play and to find problems. - Feedback. In a game, you can tap Menu, then Send feedback. We get your note, the game name, the type of play, your phone type, and the app version. The form also takes a picture of the screen. The switch "Include a picture of the screen" is on at first. If you turn it off before you tap Send, we delete the picture and do not get it. We use feedback only to fix problems and improve the app.
- Who is in the game now. During a family game, the other players can see that you are there, and they can see the quick reactions that you send. We do not keep this data. It goes away when you leave.
Some data stays only on your phone and never comes to us: your solo games, your settings, your favorite games, the names of the computer players, and the voice messages that you keep.
Voice messages are temporary
A voice message is like a short voicemail in a game. We delete it from our servers about one hour after the game ends. We also delete the voice messages of a game that nobody played for about 14 days. A family member may not open the app for some time, so we must keep a message until it can be heard. For this reason, "temporary" means that we delete it soon after the game, not that we never keep it. Each phone deletes its own copy the next time it opens that game. If you want to keep a voice message, tap Keep. That copy stays only on your phone, and we never get it again.
Purchases
The app does not sell anything, and there are no in-app purchases. If we add purchases later, we will change this policy first.
Who helps us run the app
We use a few service companies. Each one gets only the data that it needs for its job.
- Supabase keeps our database, the accounts, the live game updates, and the stored files (voice messages and feedback pictures). The servers are in the United States.
- Expo sends the notifications to your phone.
- Google gives you the app through Google Play, and delivers notifications on Android (Firebase Cloud Messaging). If you save your account with Google, Google signs you in.
- Apple signs you in only if you choose to save your account with Apple.
- Vercel hosts the invite web pages. Like all web hosts, it keeps standard web logs, such as your IP address.
- Google Firebase Hosting hosts our web game and the privacy and support pages on grandmas-games.web.app. It processes incoming IP addresses to detect abuse and understand usage, and retains them for a few months.
When you send a code to family, the app opens your phone's own share screen. The text goes through the app that you choose, such as Messages. We do not see it.
We do not give your data to anyone else, unless the law tells us to.
How we keep your data safe
Your data is encrypted when it goes between your phone and our servers. Other players see only what the game lets them see. For example, they cannot see the cards in your hand. Only the people in a game can see that game.
How long we keep data, and how to delete it
- Voice messages: about one hour after the game ends, as described above.
- Feedback notes and pictures: until we no longer need them to fix the problem.
- Usage events: while we need them to improve the app.
- Your account, games, rooms and fridge cards: until you ask us to delete them.
In a build that has Account → Delete my account (or Delete my guest account), use that button and confirm the account shown. If your build does not have the button, or you cannot sign in, email chase@hunterthomasllc.com. We may need to check that the account is yours before we remove it.
Account deletion removes your app sign-in, profile, friends, messages, feedback, notification tokens and account-linked usage events. It removes games, rooms and fridge posts that you created, including their shared copies on our server. In shared game records that identify you by your account number, we remove that number and its associated name. Other players' own data stays.
Voice and feedback files enter our server cleanup queue. The scheduled cleanup runs about every 15 minutes and retries if a file cannot be removed. A confirmation that the account was deleted does not mean that every queued file is already gone. Copies that another person saved, and solo games and voice keepsakes saved on your own device, remain. You can remove local files from the app or your device.
We keep a limited deletion record: the deleted account number and a non-reversible proof of the deletion request. This lets us confirm a repeated request and stop old requests from restoring account data. It does not contain your name, email, messages or feedback. Removing the app account does not delete your Google or Apple account.
Children
Grandma's Games is a family app for all ages. It is not made for children under 13 who play alone, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children for our own use. A child can be in a family game or in a voice message when the family chooses this. If you think that a child gave us data and you want us to remove it, contact us, and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we change the date at the top of this page. If the change is important, we also tell you in the app.
